To Enter or Not? That is the Question.

Entering a juried show can be a daunting task.  It's a gamble of sorts, as the jurying is typically so subjective.  Yes, the juror(s) look for the elements of design in a piece, but they also look for pieces that appeal to them personally. The juror(s)  also look for art that will work together to create a cohesive exhibit.  At least, that's what I'm guessing.

I have attempted to get accepted into Earth, Fire & Fibre three times. I've been rejected three times.  This is a biannual exhibit through the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. The last attempt, I decided to enter three cohesive pieces, thinking that may be a better approach than three random pieces, Fluvial Force being one of them.  All three were rejected.  Not that I've entered my work in many shows, but I've learned not to take things too personally.  Sure, it stings a bit to get that letter saying your work is not up to par, but it's part of the game.

Try, try again......
I decided to enter two pieces into The Infinity Gallery Fiber Arts Show 2012. This is an on line exhibit.  I entered two pieces a couple of years ago, and both were rejected.   Am I a glutton for punishment?

I was very happy to receive a message informing me I was a finalist in the exhibit, which meant that at least one of my pieces was accepted!  Needless to say, I was very surprised and excited that both pieces were accepted, and Fluvial Force won Best of Show!

So, go figure.  I'm going to keep entering shows, and am sure I'll get plenty more rejection notices, but they will be worth it to have my few moments of validation from time to time.

Do you enter shows?  What's your take on the jurying process?

Congrats Nancy! Your work is always wonderful! Certainly every bit as good as anything I've seen in Earth Fire & Fiber!

I haven't felt the drive to enter anything in a long time. I keep thinking I'd like to, but just don't take the time, there is always something more pressing.

It's nice to see youve gotten some of the recognition you deserve!

Well, it's about time somebody recognized how terrific your work is:-). My take on juried shows --I've had the same experience of having a piece not accepted (I don't use the word "rejected" by one show and accepted by another one. I've also been a juror for a national show and know that it's a crapshoot for the entering artists because all the jurors have to agree on all the pieces. If there are 3 jurors, one is often a tie-breaker. And jurors also barter "I'll give you this one if you give me that one." Then, there is the matter of having a cohesive show, which is often a goal - and if a piece doesn't "fit" the jurors' vision, no matter how fabulous it is, it may not get taken. Lots of reasons - none of them personal.
